Data Driven Coaching

Learn From Each Game. Re-inventing Academy Coaching

Elite Soccer Academy has a focus on data driven coaching and game-based learning. This approach is at the heart of the cognitive training development of our elite academy players and uses data driven training plans to improve players vision, technical and tactical skills.

Coaches will focus on a key set of drivers as they develop each team using player focused statistical data (technical and tactical), collected from each match. The high performance unit makes this data available for coaches after games for both individual and team based improvement. The post-match review includes lessons learned from the team and player stats each week to encourage targeted improvement and accountability.

Data helps coaches to measure the effectiveness of their practice sessions and plan future sessions. For example, when a player knows that his or her best game included 3 shots on goal and 10 total shots (the other 7 went wide), they know that 30% of their shots are on target. What might they do to improve that 30% to say 50% or higher? Players with specific feedback like this can work on their own game and think about solutions. Soccer stats give players a conversation they can have with recruiters. Recruiters want to see how well a player knows themselves and how focused they are on their own performance goals. If a goalkeeper knows what their save ratio is for a given season in a given league, they can talk about this intelligently with a recruiter when they come calling.

Data driven coaching develops elite thinking where the understanding of key performance drivers are at the heart of player development. Each touch, each successful pass, each shot, each shot on goal, etc can all be recorded and attributed to specific players during a game. Performance data and statistics provide a picture of a game. They capture individual and team statistics, that when reviewed later can highlight strengths, weaknesses, and help players and coaches adjust their focus, identify talent, and keep a record of progress made.  Performance data also give players a sound track and goals to work on.

Positions play a key role when assessing performance in football. From a quantitative perspective, when analysing the performance indicators to determine success or failure, or even to establish a benchmark to which to aim for, there are several metrics we will look to gather through notational analysis:

Technical: Shooting game, Passing game, Defensive game

Tactical: Attacking, Possession, Defensive
